Phonics

Read Write Inc:

Read Write Inc Phonics is a systematic and structured way of teaching children to read and is designed to ensure all children learn to read accurately and fluently. At New Monument Primary, children start learning phonics in Nursery and continue developing their reading in daily 45 minute session until the end of year 2.

Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

Children spend time discussing the stories and developing their comprehension skills. They  also write in every lesson using their knowledge of phonics to spell words using the graphemes and ‘tricky’ words they know.

Sessions are held daily and children are grouped according to their phonic knowledge, not their age.
