Phonics and Spelling

Read Write Inc Phonics is a systematic and structured way of teaching children to read and is designed to ensure all children learn to read accurately and fluently. At New Monument Primary, children start learning phonics in Nursery and continue developing their reading in daily 45 minute session until the end of year 2.

Children learn the English alphabetic code: first they learn one way to read the 40+ sounds and blend these sounds into words, then learn to read the same sounds with alternative graphemes.

They experience success from the very beginning. Lively phonic books are closely matched to their increasing knowledge of phonics and ‘tricky’ words and, as children re-read the stories, their fluency increases.

Children spend time discussing the stories and developing their comprehension skills. They  also write in every lesson using their knowledge of phonics to spell words using the graphemes and ‘tricky’ words they know.

Sessions are held daily and children are grouped according to their phonic knowledge, not their age.

Read Write Inc. Spelling is a programme for children in Years 2 - 6. It is designed to be taught in daily sessions of approximately 15 minutes. We have chosen to use this programme as it builds on the skills and knowledge children develop through Read Write Inc. Phonics. The fast-paced lessons with videos and games engage the children well.
Spelling is taught by looking at different word patterns and rules. The children have the opportunity to explore these during their lessons using a range of activities such as:
  • Dots and dashes
  • Team teach
  • Dictation
Each week, children will be given a set of spellings to learn at home. These will be based on their ability and will be tested weekly.
